Scaphoid is a very important bone in the wrist.........its the commonest to get fractured among its cadre.......Mode of injury being a fall on an outstretched hand.......i have come across in a book it comes after "kick back" injury after u start a motor of a throttle pedal.
There will be intense pain especially on movements of the wrist at the base of your thumb in the wrist.
Doctors are often challenged because hairline fractures are often missed.
minor fractures can be treated in plaster cast.......but the period in plaster is longer for this bone!
Fractures that are sever and displaced need surgery........and fixed with a metal . Simple Kwires to staples can be used......Herberts screw hmmm is another option
i have never seen a surgery for scaphoid fracture.
scaphoid fracture treated in plaster yes i think i have seen 3 or 4

No wires or cast. Percutaneous herbert screw is the standard of care in 09 I believe. You can check my blog http://knee-replacement-india.blogspot.com to see an example
I am a 1st year MBBS student, still struggling with the basics. Frankly, I did not understand this article. So, I am not eligible to leave a comment.
David Ring in Fractures of hand and wrist 2007:
surgical fixation maybe opted in les angulated fractures of the scaphoid if patient doesnt want prolonged immobilisation.
Though immobilisation is worth a try in Type A Herbert classification..
Excellent flowchart for type A, B, C and D HErbert fractures in the same book...
